The Dreaded Over-the-top swing 🏌️
What Is an Over-the-Top Golf Swing?
If you play golf, you may have heard the words “over-the-top golf swing.”
But what does that really mean?
An over-the-top swing happens when the golf club moves too far outside on the way down.
Instead of swinging from the inside, the club cuts across the ball.
When this happens, it can cause:
A slice when the club face is open
A pull when the club face is square
Most golfers think this is just a swing problem.
But most of the time, it is actually a body movement problem.
Why Does an Over-the-Top Golf Swing Happen?
Your body is very smart.
If it cannot move the right way, it will find a shortcut.
An over-the-top golf swing often happens when:
Your hips do not turn well
Your upper body moves too fast
Your arms try to do all the work
When your body feels stiff or weak, it takes the easiest path to hit the ball.
That path just happens to be over the top.
This is why telling yourself to “swing inside” rarely works.
Your body still cannot do it.
Why Golf Swing Tips Alone Do Not Fix It
Many golfers spend years chasing golf swing tips.
They watch videos.
They think harder.
They try to swing slower.
They try to swing in-to-out and then out-to-in.
Soon, they focus on the wrong things and get lost in the small details.
But if your body cannot move the right way, the swing will not change.
The swing shows the problem.
The body is the reason.
How We Help Fix an Over-the-Top Swing for Good
At APEX, we do not guess.
And we do not use cookie-cutter drills.
We are Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) certified, which means we look at how your body moves and how it affects your golf swing.
We assess:
How your hips move
How your core works
How your body creates power
Then we build a custom movement plan to help your body move better.
When your body moves better, your golf swing follows.
That is how golfers stop slicing.
That is how distance comes back.
And that is how confidence returns.
If you are tired of fighting your golf swing, it may be time to fix the real cause, not just the symptom.
