Your Oura Ring Says You're Recovered. Your Body Says Otherwise. Who Do You Believe?
You wake up.
You feel good.
You slept well.
You have energy.
You're ready to work out.
Then you check your Oura Ring.
Readiness Score: 62.
Suddenly...
"Maybe I should take it easy today."
Sound familiar?
We've reached a pretty interesting point in health and fitness.
Our watches tell us when to stand.
Our rings tell us how well we slept.
Our phones count our steps.
We track our heart rate, HRV, recovery, stress, calories, sleep stages and workouts.
And to be clear...
That data can be incredibly useful.
It can help us recognize patterns we probably wouldn't notice on our own.
But there's a question I think more of us need to ask:
Are we using the data to understand our bodies, or are we letting the data make decisions for us?
Because your body is giving you information too.
How do you actually feel when you wake up?
How does your body feel during your warm-up?
Do you feel strong?
Do you feel unusually sluggish?
Is something painful?
Are you mentally exhausted?
How did yesterday's workout actually affect you?
Those things matter.
A readiness score is one piece of information.
Your body is another.
And sometimes those two pieces of information won't perfectly agree.
That's okay.
The goal shouldn't be to chase a perfect score every morning.
The goal is to become better at understanding your body.
Use the technology.
Pay attention to trends.
Learn from the information.
But don't forget to look up from the screen and ask yourself:
"How do I actually feel?"
Because there's something ironic about having more health data than any generation before us...
while becoming less confident in our ability to listen to our own bodies.
Your Oura Ring can give you information.
Your Garmin can give you information.
Your Apple Watch can give you information.
But none of them get to live in your body today.
You do.
Maybe the healthiest relationship with wearable technology isn't blindly following every number.
It's using the numbers to become better at understanding the person wearing the device.
